DEVONSHIRE AND COMBE DOWN TUNNEL OLD RAILWAY LINES

DEVONSHIRE AND COMBE DOWN TUNNEL OLD RAILWAY LINES

The Somerset and Dorset railway network Combe Down Tunnel is the northern portal and Devonshire Tunnel is the southern portal which both were opened in 1874.

Combe down tunnel was once the longest tunnel in the Uk without ventilation when trains pass through it would be very hard to travel through its dark blackness the tunnel would fill up with smoke when trains had heavy loads on which would cause drivers to pass out.

Combe Down Tunnel is 1,829 yards (1,672m)long

Devonshire Tunnel is 447 yards (409m) long

The two tunnels were closed in 1966 until may 2008 when planning permission was approved to turn the two tunnels into an cycling path which opened on 06 April 2013 after the tunnel was equipped with cycle friendly surface and led lighting.

THE TWO RUNAWAY TRAIN STORY

on 26 July 1936 driver Rawlings and fireman Frank Parker was on there little Jinty tank engine which was carrying 8 coal wagons at 8.10am they noticed a large class heavy train heading towards them to avoid head on they open their regulator to try and get away from the runaway, The crew on the 7F train jump off the footplate to try and pinned down the break on the wagons to slow the train down. Rawlings jumped off his train and climbed onto the 7F and slowed the train down to a halt to stop a disaster.

Fireman  Frank Parker didn’t hear Rawlings to stop their engine to the train and he also jump off the footplate which now their train was an runaway which was heading toward Wellow, Midford and bath with eight wagon both trying to catch up with the Jinty but could only watch in horror as the train went out of sight.

lucky no one was killed or hurt the train caused a lot of damage as it was doing 50mph along the track seven of the wagons derailed on along the way the damaged cause was telegraph poles, signal post, station building was damaged in Midford then six wagon fell 40ft  down embankment which two landed in an residents garden at this point it was surprise the engine didn’t derail at this time.

The train and it one wagon that was left on the train but only by running on one wheel set carry on to Bath yes the train made it way through both Combe down and Devonshire Tunnels successfully the engine derail under Claude Avenue Bridge when the coal wagon door end fell off the train was lodged sideway against the bridge stonework which was lucky all there would off be an collision with an passenger train which was leaving Green park station in bath 20 minutes after the crash.

TRAIN CRASH

On 20 November 1929 at 3.25pm the driver was Henry Jennings and fireman Maurice Pearce had left to go towards Bath with an full load which was mainly coal, The engine was not steaming well but the crew carry on they was running late and had to stop to let one goods train and two passenger train to pass.

As they enter the mile long Combe Down Tunnel due to the train moving slowly through the tunnel it became very hot and filled up with smoke which cause the driver and the fireman to become unconscious by the fumes, now the train is heading to the end of the tunnel which is an incline down toward Bath travelling at about 50 to 60 mph.

Sadly people were killed, Inspector John Norman was killed in his office and a clerk  who was with the LMS was killed by debris as he walked across the yard, The driver died on the way to the hospital the Fireman Pearce and the guard Christopher Wagner were only badly injured.

The route was used in world war one and two which help troop trains, armament train and ambulance trains were seen over the line in large numbers.

On 21 march 1879 Francis was in the Combe Down tunnel was replacing a broken fishplate bolt by himself around 2.40pm an Wimborne to Bath train enter the South portal side of the tunnel, This would of change the air pressure and tweaked his eardrum and make his flame on the hand lamp flicker why did Francis not stand clear from the track in one of the standing room in the tunnels.

By not doing so he paid with his life and was found laying next to the track still conscious but with his injuries he lost an boot with his foot still inside the boot which was found later by an engine driver, His other injuries was his left leg was crushed, six ribs broken and his scalp bore a large gash sadly Francis die at Royal Untied Hospital Bath leaving behind his wife and six kids this was not an suicide he was just one out of 1.032 lives that are taken by Britain Railway.

What happen in my paranormal investigation

On Saturday 22 July

We headed down towards Combe Down Tunnel for an paranormal investigation everything went wrong we got we walked down some steep stairs in the rain and they through mad and an small woods yep we got lost and was ending up far away from the car, We found the tunnel and it said light go out at 11pm ok so we walk this tunnel omg it didn’t want to end so we came across some teenager and show them the map where the car was we ended up at another tunnel there two story short we was total lost didn’t know where the car was and ended up getting an uber to take us back to the car.

So this is now 11pm back to the Tunnel. This time we did Devonshire Tunnel, the nearest one to us which was not far from the road. Set up my equipment put out Nellie the elephant toy, Rope light, Tab II hot/cold Temp, and had my ghost tub Vox on and spirits talker app, we had some names come through Jacob, Amy, Bernadette, Ivy, Ralph, Lucille, Billy, William etc.

Some other words that came through were Phantom, Tragedy, Emotion, Electric shock, so much heartache, Burial, Ritual etc.

But on my Vox my husband Andy ask the train driver when the next train and it sound like the driver sounded his horn, so we ask the train driver to sound the horn every time he pass watch the video and let us know what you think, During the night we had Nellie ear was set off a few time and the rope light the energy was really good at this tunnel also the tunnel light didn’t go off at all.

We went back and this time we investigated the Combe Down Tunnel. We did the middle and we had some equipment out. It was hard to do an investigation here as there were a lot of bikes passed by us but we got some response.

COLDHARBOUR MILL

COLDHARBOUR MILL

Some history about the mill Coldharbour Mill was originally a mill for corn or grist set in 15 acres of land within the village of Uffculme, Devon.

There has been a mill on this site since mediaeval times, according to the Domesday book. The name “Coldharbour” is said to be derived from Anglo Saxon, possibly meaning “Old Shelter”. The area had plenty of resources, such as an ample supply of sheep, and therefore fleeces, and also easy access to the River Culm for a continuous supply of water.

Seeing an opportunity for developing his woollen textile business, Thomas Fox bought the land, complete with buildings and its own water wheel, in 1797 for 1100 guineas. Mill workers had to work 12 hour shifts up at 5.55am ready to work for 6am if late was docked half a day pay every Monday - Saturday by a big bell on top of the roof.  The working conditions were grim, working long hours with little light coming through the window and in winter by oil lamps, The Noise of the machine would be so loud that some of the workers would become deaf from it. The air they breath was full of fibres and dust. Mill women who operated the machine were only allowed to be absent from there post when there bobbins was filled up.

Thomas wanted a women workforce because there was less trouble. Thomas then built a large wool-spinning mill on the site to serve his weaving factories in Somerset and opened it in 1799. In the 19th century, six of his sons continued their father’s work and the company took the name of Fox Brothers. In 1799 children from the age of 6 years old were employed until Thomas Fox changed it to no under 8 years old to work at the mill.

Originally the mill was powered by the water wheel, with a new one installed in 1821, however the Fox Brothers were keen innovators and making use of new technology, they installed the steam engines in 1865 to power the factory's machines and keep up with production demands. At this point the Fox Brothers changed their business from woollen to worsted spinning enabling a larger range of products with a higher quality finish more suited to being woven into their iconic textiles. Coldharbour Mill played a key part in the Industrial Revolution in the South West, as Fox Brothers' developed a domestic or cottage industry into large scale factory production, distributing textile products throughout the world.

Coldharbour Mill is one of the oldest working woollen textile mills in the world. The Mill opened as a working museum in 1982 and is a rare surviving example of Georgian architecture, industry and enterprise. Coldharbour Mill has the potential to be one of the most haunted spots in the county. The mill has been in continuous production since 1797 and is today run by a non-for profit charitable trust.

GWRYCH CASTLE

GWRYCH CASTLE

This is one of Britain’s finest examples of architecture in mediaeval style from the early 19th century. Different sections of the castle are based on specific mediaeval castles in North Wales.

Castle was built between 1810 and 1825 by Lloyds Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh (1787–1861), in memory of his mother Frances Lloyd and her ancestors. It incorporated an earlier house that had been in the ownership of the Lloyds since the late-mediaeval period.

From 1894 until 1924, Winfred, Countess of Dundonald, the Hesketh heiress, owned the estate and it became the residence of the Earls of Dundonald (family name of Cochrane) whose generation of their family also added to the castles. The countess left the castle in her will to King George V and the then Prince of wales (who later became Edward VIII) However the gift was refused and the castle passed to the Venerable Order of Saint John.

In 1928, the 12th Earl of Dundonald purchased the castle for £78,000 (equivalent to £4,700,000 in 2019), selling the contents to meet the cost.

Lady Dundonald spoke Welsh She founded two military hospitals in the First World War, King George VI thanked her for “looking after my soldiers” when he visited one of the hospitals in London in 1916.

In 1938-1939 during the Second World War the castle was home to 180 boys and girls who had been evacuated from Nazi-occupied Europe by the Kindertransport, which helped move young Jewish refugees to safety in Britain. The aim was to return the children to their parents when the Nazi war was over and a tree has been planted onsite to remember the children.

In August 1940 the children at Gwrych were being prepared for eventual emigration to Palestine, They were under the care of James Burke, 31, who had previously worked in Switzerland and Austria for the International Voluntary Service for Peace and Society of Friends (Quakers), Abergele’s medical Hall supplied medicines for the children.

In 1946 The Dundonalds sold Gwrych Castle, Which ended almost 1,000 years of the family ownership of the site. In the post-war decades, tourists flocked to its mediaeval-style banquets, markets and jousting events and rode on its miniature railway. Under successive owners from 1990 onwards the castle decayed and was stripped of fittings.

In 1950 English World Middleweight Boxing Champion Randolph Turpin used the castle as his training venue.

In 1987 The castle closed to the public and it started to decline, It was bought in 1989 by Nick Tavaglione, an American businessman. However his plans to renovate the building were not carried out and As a result the castle was extensively looted and vandalised.

In 1994 looters sold off fittings, fireplaces and stained glass and stripped the slates and lead from the roof. Later vandals continued to create damage, and battlements were toppled from the towers, Also in 1994 arsonists destroyed power-lines by setting an old caravan alight.

In 2018 Gwrych Castle and its estate was sold to Gwrych Castle Preservation Trust a registered charity which was enabled by a grant from the National Heritage Memorial Fund.

In August 2020 it was rumoured that ITV had chosen the castle for the filming of the 20th series of I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here!, This was confirmed on 27 August after Gwrych publicly confirmed this on their social media sites, Giovanna Fletcher was crowned the first-ever Queen of the Castle at the end of the series.

In August 2021 ITV confirmed that I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here! would be returning to Gwrych for the second time ensuring that further funds would help restore the castle.

What happen in my paranormal investigation

Saturday 10th February 2024

First paranormal this year we also had guest with us throughout the night,

We started an investigation in the stable with our guest. We had flasher the dog out laser lights and we encouraged the spirits to set off some of the equipment which they did.

We moved to the dairy area where we did some calls out. One of the guests used their rod for yes and no answer which we had a boy come through. A different guest had a go and she had a girl come forward who knew the stable boy there was some really good feeling coming from here.

We moved on to the chapel where it is known for a female spirit to tell people to leave. We did some more call out and we had some taps but very quiet which we could just hear from the tips noise, one of the guests asked if they could knock twice which they did.

A guest did an Ouija board in this area, while me and another guest went where the stairs were and there was a green light at the top and me, the team and some of the guests tried to debunk it but we couldn't.

bakehouse not much happen in there so we try the garage and had the temp go to red in here like the word no

Near the end me and the guest went back into the stable where we first started to finish the evening off. We had a female spirit come through to see work with the horses and was happy being there but found it lonely. There was a cloth hanging and it moved and would stop. We tried to debunk this but you couldn’t wish to record it. It is hard to explain how some of the cloth stays still when halfway up a piece just moves forward. While this was happening the spirits were also answering questions.

LLANFYLLIN WORKHOUSE

Built in 1839 to house up to 250 paupers the whole family would be admitted and separated men's woman girls and boys which was the strict rules laid down by the government of the poor Law reform only children under age of 7 were allowed to stay with their mothers.

Some people walk in but not all souls walk out due to disease which was rife throughout the workhouse. In that era it was common practice to be buried in an unmarked grave ( known as Paupers grave).

Vagrant's task was stone breaking for them to stay overnight in the casual ward.

The Dartmoor shepherd, He was known for his petty crime of robbing Church poor boxes.

In May 1924 he was sent to Workhouse as he didn't want to die in Prison.

In April 1929 he slipped out of the Workhouse that night body was found the next morning down the road.

In 1966-1982 Workhouse became an old people's home called The Meadows which was managed by Mr and Mrs Bowen until it closed and became empty.

A scheme to turn the building into an Activity Centre didn’t happen due to the death of one of the partners who was in a fatal accident that caused the project to run into difficulties.

Sadly the workhouse was sold to a property developer who ripped out anything with value fireplace, fitting and then removed stairs and the floorboard then left it empty and derelict which allowed vandals to break into the building and cause more damage by throwing brick through the window ect.

In 2001 a local businesswoman Hilary Collins stepped in and bought the workhouse. Her plan was to restore the building and use it to house a National Antiques Centre for Wales along with a heritage centre. However it became clear that grant aid would be needed to fund the restoration and that this required the setting up of a charitable trust to own the building.

This led to the formation of the Llanfyllin Dolydd Building Preservation Trust, The Trust finally bought the building with a loan in November 2004.

Earlier that year Y Dolydd had been chosen as one of three buildings to represent Wales in the BBC programme Restoration which attracted more than 15,000 votes.

What happen in my paranormal investigation

What a great night here for the first investigation Master and Matron sleeping area was where we started the music box on the fireplace went off a few times, cats ball on the table and in the window also went off and they enjoyed setting the dog off too.

we moved into the dinning area where things got not nice in this part there was movement by the doorway where the red light was it was like someone was stopping the spirits coming forward we got told to get out through the ghost tube Vox we played some music and got told to be quiet again some think didn’t want us in this area  not much happen in here. An male voice came through on the Vox and said it was going to hurt us. Andy told the spirit you will not and it replied with yes.

We moved on to the room under where the men once slept and worked. We again had movement within the doorway. There were some taps which sounded upstairs as we went for a break. I was telling the live show that we would be back soon. When I listened back there was a female voice that said yes.

Now upstairs where the men slept we had some cat balls go off while down stairs we left a ghostbuster car which is like an rem pod which wouldn’t shut up we ended up turning it off whatever was downstairs it was trying to get attention.

MONTGOMERY CASTLE

MONTGOMERY CASTLE

Montgomery is one of those castles that, even in ruin, retain a powerful atmosphere and presence that transcend its state of preservation. Perhaps it’s something to do with its location, on a steep hill above a pretty Georgian town with all-seeing views across the Welsh border.

Around 1223 on the orders of Henry III in response to the growing power of Welsh native prince Llywelyn ap Iorwerth (Llywelyn the Great), Montgomery’s stone castle replaced a nearby wooden fort known as Hen Domen. Perched on its rocky ridge, This new fortress was significantly sturdier and more sophisticated, with a stone inner ward, well, deep defensive ditches crossed by drawbridges and walled town.

The castle remained in use for centuries, surviving attacks by Llywelyn in 1228 and 1231 and Llywelyn’s son Dafydd in 1245. The castle’s ultimate end came during the Civil War, when it fell to the Parliamentarians and was demolished in 1649, leaving just the crumbling towers and low walls that stand today.

On 01 Jan 1288  Maud Varas a widow died by the tower with severe blow to the head the Daughter after nine years accused William of St Albans of the murder of her mother, The jury found Maud's death by misadventure.
Was this murder or an accident?

The manor house we could only go to by the gate and next to, like an old school house or hall, not much happened here. The temperature was going to blue and red and few words came through the ghost tube Vox app.

Last part of the night opposite the manor house was a courtyard where people sit. There was an old round building there where we put some cat balls down and a cat ball on some log stepping stones. The cat ball was going off in the corner and I heard someone whistle.
will need to go back and explore this area more.

AVEBURY STONES

Avebury stone is known as a Neolithic Britain site. About 4,600 years old ,older than Stonehenge, Villages used to worship the god for protection against natural disasters and diseases. Records show that the Viking invaded Avebury.

In the 7th/8th century Anglo Saxon turned to Christianity and the church was built which started the stone to be pulled down. Some were buried due to people thinking they were something to do with the devil, there was a stone called the devil chair.

There a story in the 18th/19th century being told of the cobbler man who was crushed one of the stone due to the gods being angry by them pulling the stones down, and that the black death hit the village in the 1949, After the black death people stone pulling down the stones and using them to built there cottages due to having to try and grow food.

In 1938 while digging some of the area a man's bones was found carrying a feather pouch with 3 silver coins in it.

Gary expenditure  found a skeleton of a woman with 20 small sarsen stones around her in one of the large ditches.

Obelisk stone is the central stone of where southern inner stone once stood; this was recorded by William Stukeley.

What happen in my paranormal investigation

MAY 2023

We started off at the Devil chair we had some voices coming through on the ghost tube Vox, Cats ball going off, Flasher the dog and the ghost car light up to.

wishing tree not much happened here only on the ghost tube Vox we had some voices come through.

Another field where there was a big stone we set some equipment up and the temperature off and cat ball, Andy heard footsteps that were right next to him and no one was there.

We went back this time just us girls. Well, we had flasher the dog off by a tree and a ribbon came down and was near the equipment for a while. Also the tripwire light was going off when we asked a question.

Then we went to the big stones on the other side which are called male and female stones. The k2 was going off inside one of the stones and the tripwire lights it felt like a lot of energy was being given between the two stones.

The wishing tree was quiet on the equipment but we kept hearing this really weird noise which we had to kept shining our light where the sheep was we still not know what it was, Then the maybugs came out to play yep it went down my jumper which I didn’t know at the time did I scream.

We did some calling out by the obelisk stone and had a few cat balls and tripwire go off. It was a bit quiet and I will need to go back again to investigate here.

LUGBURY LONGBARROW CHAMBERED TOMB

LUGBURY LONGBARROW CHAMBERED TOMB

The barrow was once known  as Little Drew/Nettleton and Lock stone.
Lug is named after the Celtic gods.
In 1821  Colt-Hoare and again in 1854/5  Scrope  did Excavated here they found four chambers made of limestone which had 26 skeletons in.
Long barrows are said to be constructed to be funerary monuments during the early/middle Neolithic periods (3400-2400 BC).

LUGBURY LONG BARROW

LANHILL LONG BARROW

LANHILL LONG BARROW

The barrow was believed to have been about 190 ft long and 90 ft wide but Lanhill has had various excavations right up into the 1960s and much of the material has been taken for road building and a small a nearby wall, It is said to have had two chambers on the north side and a false entrance at the east end side but because of all the damage these are now all gone. Only a little reconstructed chamber does still exist on the south side which you can get into but it is only about 2m long by just over a metre high and wide.
Constructed about 5,000 years ago it is known as Hubba’s Low according to John Aubrey, however this name has been disputed. Hubba was a leader of the Danes and Low is a burial place but no real record showing a link to Hubba can be found and of course the barrow itself is very much older.

Scattered in the various chambers were about 20 burials ranging from a 12 month old baby to adults of 50-60 years of age. Some of the skulls were used by Doctor A J E Cave to carry out a study on many of the individuals and concluded they were most probably related through descent.

What happen in my paranormal investigation

JUNE 2023

I came across this long barrow in April and  went by myself during the day. It felt very peaceful then again in May but the grass is a lot higher, I only took my app on phone and tablet and took pictures too, but finally got around to do an evening investigation.

Sat 10th June we went here to do paranormal investigation well it didn't disappoint, In the chamber we had cats ball, flasher the dog,k2 and the temp kit on the entrance stone, outside the chamber we had tripwire lights and the ghost buster red pod car,
Oliver, my son came with us and we had a boy spirit come through. Oliver sat inside the chamber and the dog was going off and the k2 equipment went mad while he was in there and after too.

we was stood outside the entrance and we started hearing banging it was coming from the long barrow right next to us, we try to debunk it but couldn't, We also heard a whistle and my husband said it was like someone was whistling in his ear. because we had my son with me things start to feel like it was turning into not a nice spirit so we call it an night will be going back again.
We try to head towards the wood area as when we walk the dog there it feels like you are being watched and I had some stuff come through on the app.

JUNE 2023

Back again for another investigation well what can i say the spirits were setting off the tripwire lights behind us trying to communicate with my husband.

We had some catball go off inside the hole but the outside around we put k2 on the top we had the k2 go off it was like it was trying to talk to us in code, I ask the spirits to make th k2 lights flash twice and it did they i said after 3 set the light of again which they did this just amazed me with the connection that i had with the spirits.

temp machine the spirit likes to make this go red or blue to our yes and no answers throughout the night.

Germany then turned to Great Britain to invade. The Germans used battle tanks which helped with fire power, mobility and protection to their crew.

The British Military look into our land battle to defensive us from the Germany tanks, as we had small number tank to slow German down around Britain rivers, canals, railway embankments and cutting and creating obstacles which ditches and concrete bollards to slow the German tanks down so our could get to specific point.

Stop Line was also put into place around England Green line was our last chance to defend if the other line fall this would have defended Bristol to keep the port open to evacuation purposes or to help resupply and reinforce our soldiers.

There was a yellow stop line, red stop line and blue stop line all collected to the green stop line.

All work stop on them in October 1940, the Royal Air Force had won The Battle of Britain in the air which stopped the German Invasion as impossible.

JUNE 2023

we came back again and the feeling in here was different the spirits set of the tripwire lights there was an women with us, we was warned to be carefully but didn’t say who from, Andy hear someone walking around outside but no one was there. We had two k2 in the bunker and a few times both went off together at the same time. Also, a ghostbuster car went off a few times.

Andy felt not great from the time he stepped in he said it felt like his head being hit with a hammer but normally he doesn’t get affected by the spirits.

This place doesn’t disappoint. Sometimes it makes you feel welcome and others tell you to go.

MARCH 2023

What can I say about this place Me and Andy started upstairs and we had some equipment going of cats ball and my robot toy move when no one was near it  and flasher the dog was flashing when spirit went near him when no  one was near it and we had voice and word from are ghost tube/Vox app that we use.

Middle room again, like the cat's  balls, the teddy bear was set off and the touch was turning on and off by itself. This also happened when we left them in the room while investigating somewhere else.

Clock tower, what do I say about this area we heard a door bang, the dog flasher was going off, cats ball and when we left the iPad in there while we had a break.

This area is when we had another team join us UK Ghostcatchers who help a boy and his mum pass over which a negative energy was not happy about, I heard a growl right next to me nearly jump out of my skin and there was taping next to me too, Being the only female there it turn it energy to me while I was in the clock tower by myself, How did it make me feel scared by was not going to show this energy that I was I can't explain but my

SALLY IN THE WOODS

SALLY IN THE WOODS

Sally in the woods is known for being haunted and here is some of the history about the tower and the woods.
The tower was built in 1848 and is called Brown's Folly Tower.
It is said that the woods were used for witchcraft and sacrifice in the old days. Also black shadow can be seen in the woods and growls can be heard in your ears and you can sometimes hear a baby cry.
In the 18th century the tower was used as an outpost for the soldiers.
Here are the two story that is know and said about Sally in the woods which one true all are there two Sally who walk the woods at night and daytime.

Sarah Gibson was an elderly woman who was married to her husband who was the gamekeeper when he died she was evicted to leave her home as people called her a witch. Sally went to live in a cabin in the middle of the woods which we called Sally in the woods. She lived here alone until she died.

The other story which is told of an Gypsy girl who was imprisoned by soldiers and left her in the tower to die with no food or water.
The girl in an white dress is seen running across the road that goes through near Sally in the woods and she is sometimes seen in the back of people's cars.

What happen in my paranormal investigation

MARCH 2023

We park halfway up the hill in the car park and walk towards the tower through the woods which look very creepy, We found the tower and I put some cats ball down on the stairs and k2 metre We called out to any spirits in the tower to come and communicate with us through our ghost tube app and the Vox app.

We had some great response when the cat ball was being set off and the k2 (video to follow).

We went down a path near the tower. It didn't have a nice feeling when we walked along there. We put some cat balls out on the path and k2 again we had a spirit trying to communicate with us by flashing.

We walked back to the tower and went along the path behind and found an area to do some call out. We heard footsteps coming towards us but no one was there, again they like the cat ball. Where we were it felt like someone was watching us and their phone was being drained.

We went back to the tower hoping to do some more investigation but there was people there so we walk back along the path where we first came from the car park and did some call out in the creepy part not much happen but took some photo and when I look back at the them u can see someone watching from the tree line.

I need to go back again and really do  some more investigation as there is a lot to clover here and see if we can get Sally to come forward to talk to us.
